Questions on Broadband Project Welcomed at TCC Meeting

Interested members of the public are invited to attend a Stafford Telecommunications Commission meeting this Thursday, April 13, to hear more about Stafford’s newest broadband initiative. Comcast Government Representative Nathan Daugherty will be present to give an update on Stafford’s partnership with Comcast to extend broadband into Rock Hill and Hartwood. The effort is made possible by a grant through the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Telecommunications Initiative (VATI).

This expansion will bring Comcast’s fast, reliable and fiber-rich network along with its innovative suite of Xfinity products and services, including residential broadband speeds up to 1.2 gigabits per second (Gbps), to more than 650 homes in Stafford County in the Rock Hill and Hartwood districts.

At this meeting, several residents were contacted by Comcast regarding easement discussions. Please note that you are welcome to attend this meeting to have any questions answered by Comcast that evening.

Construction continues on schedule, with the project expected to be completed by the end of 2023. Comcast has connected multiple homes and is also working on securing easements.

Residents can check to see if their address is included in the expansion project. Residents whom Comcast currently serves can visit or call 1-800-XFINITY to inquire about service or learn more about the federal government’s Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which provides eligible households with up to $30/month toward their Internet and/or mobile service ($75/month on Tribal lands). The credit can be applied to any tier of Xfinity Internet service, including Internet Essentials, along with mobile service through Xfinity Mobile.

Stafford also applied for a 2023 VATI grant to connect unserved or underserved pockets throughout the county. As of today, the state has not announced the recipients of those grants.

The Telecommunications Commission meets on April 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Chambers of the George L. Gordon, Jr., Government Center, 1300 Courthouse Road, Stafford, VA 22554.
