Armed Services Memorial Commission

In July of 2012, the Stafford County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to establish a commission to create an armed services memorial in Stafford County that would: honor the loss of Stafford’s brave sons and daughters and their families; provide a place for families and citizens to honor the fallen; and serve as a visible reminder to the public of all the men and women who gave the last full measure of devotion to their country.

The commission worked with Stafford County Public Schools to hold a design competition. Students from each of Stafford's five high schools were invited to submit drawings of their vision of a memorial. The winning design was by Aaron Brown of North Stafford High School, who won a $1,500 scholarship. All of the top five designs will be used by an architect to prepare the final design for the memorial which is planned for the government campus at Stafford Courthouse. The names of all five finalists will also be inscribed on a plaque at the memorial.

The Board named 3 members to the Commission which was tasked with coming up with a vision and a plan to recommend to the Board.

The members are:
  • Lt. Gen. Ron Christmas, USMC (Ret.), a highly decorated Marine and also the driving force behind the creation of the National Museum of the Marine Corps
  • Mark Dudenhefer, a former Stafford County Board of Supervisors member, and former member of the Virginia House of Delegates, and a retired Marine
  • Supervisor Gary Snellings, a member of the Stafford Board of Supervisors who served in the Air Force
The Commission was officially disbanded as of December 31, 2017, after successfully raising the funds, creating and building the memorial. Stafford is very grateful for their service.
