Update from Stafford County
  • Stafford County employees from the Regional Landfill, Utilities and Parks and Recreation removed 550 tons of debris so far.
  • 40 homes are still on the “uninhabitable” list.
  • The Sheriff’s Office and Fire and Rescue will continue to keep a presence in the community for the next several days.

Cleanup Safety
The Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department urges residents affected by the recent tornado, as well as the scores of individuals and groups that are lending a hand in the clean up, to heed the following safety precautions so injuries can be minimized.

  • Always wear personal protective equipment, to include; boots or hard sole foot wear, gloves, head protection (if near or in a damaged structure), long sleeve shirt and long pants, eye protection and ear protection (if operating power tools).
  • Limit working after sunset, and ensure adequate lighting of you do
  • Remain hydrated and take sufficient rest periods during heavy clean up sessions
  • Keep basic first aid supplies close at hand
  • Work in pairs when possible

Be aware of remaining hazards;

  1. Unstable/unsecured building materials such as shingles, siding and brick may dislodge and fall during reconstruction/clean up.
  2. Glass shards, nails and small, sharp debris is located in lawns, mulch beds and common areas. NO BARE FEET until these areas are thoroughly checked. Watch your pets as well.
  3. Expect an increase in construction traffic and the use of heavy equipment and machinery. Do not assume the operator is aware of your presence.
  4. Never assume that gas or electric service is turned off. Contact the service provider, or county utilities for assistance.
