Structure Information

  • Red placard means your house is unsafe and not stabilized. The house has been deemed uninhabitable, and you are not permitted to enter the house for safety reasons.
  • Yellow placard means your house is stabilized, but still unsafe and uninhabitable. However, you are able to begin permanent restoration. For safety reasons, you must be escorted by a Stafford County building inspector inside your home. Please call the Department of Code Administration at (540) 658-8650 beginning on Monday, May 13, at 8:00 a.m. to schedule a visit by a building inspector. The department will schedule these appointments as soon as possible.

Dumpster Information
Dumpsters will be available at Gayle Middle School by Monday, May 12. Residents can use these dumpsters for general household debris. Private contractors are responsible for hauling away their own debris.

Caution Needed Throughout the Community

  • Glass, nails, wood and other sharp items are still scattered throughout the community, even in areas that appeared to have been unaffected by the tornado!
  • Do not walk barefoot in these areas.
  • It is safer to stay away from these areas until the cleanup is complete.

Tax Relief
Code of Virginia allows for real estate taxes to be adjusted if:

  • The damage incurred is more than $500
  • The structure will be uninhabitable for more than 30 days
  • Call Commissioner of the Revenue, Scott Mayausky, at 658-4132, ext. 1122.

Personal Property taxes can be adjusted if the damaged property is disposed of by the owner. If the current owner retains ownership of the property, the tax bill cannot be adjusted to reflect damage until January 1 of next year.

  • If you dispose of a damaged car, boat or any other personal property, inform the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office as soon as possible so your tax bill can be adjusted accordingly. The number is 658-4132, ext. 1122.

Questions about the payment of the first half of your tax bill should be addressed to the Treasurer’s Office at (540) 658-8700.
