Stafford Holds Grand Opening for New Park
October 16
The Stafford Parks and
Recreation Department will hold a grand opening ceremony for Patawomeck Park on Saturday, October 18, 2008
beginning at 11:00 a.m.
The park covers approximately 180 acres in Widewater and offers amenities
including lighted and irrigated soccer, football and softball fields; a picnic
pavilion; and restrooms. There are also several playground areas for children.
The Moncure family gave the County the parkland in
exchange for the former Fritter
Park, the location of the new
Quantico
Corporate Center. The $4.8 million to construct the
facility was taken from the 2001 Recreation Bond Funds, with the exception of
$500,000 from Mr. Moncure as part of the land transfer.
Speakers at the ceremony will include Chairman of the
Board of Supervisors George Schwartz; Griffis-Widewater Supervisor Bob Woodson;
Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commission Tom Paton; and Parks and
Recreation Director Chris Hoppe.
The ceremony will be held at Patawomeck Park, located at 25 Chopawamsic Parkway in Stafford. The park is located off of U.S. Route 1 in
Widewater. Directions: Heading north on Route 1 at Boswell’s Corner, turn right
on Telegraph
Road. Proceed for about ½ mile. Take a left on
Widewater
Road. Follow Widewater Road for about 1 mile. The park
is on your right at Chopawamsic
Parkway.
