Stafford County to Host Student Government Day

Members of the Board of Supervisors and County staff will host 75 students from Brooke Point, North Stafford, Stafford, Colonial Forge and Mountain View high schools during Student Government Day on Tuesday, March 4, 2008.

Students will work one-on-one with employees throughout the Government Center. They will also conduct a mock Board meeting at 11:00 a.m. to debate a project to widen Courthouse Road from two to four lanes. The students will discuss funding for the project and the impact it would have on traffic congestion and nearby businesses.

“This is a unique opportunity for students to experience firsthand the challenges that local governments face each day,” said Anthony Romanello, County Administrator. “Student Government Day teaches them about projects and initiatives on which local tax dollars are spent, and how important each person’s input is to the success of the democratic process.”

The schedule for the day follows:

8:15 a.m. – 8:45 a.m.          
Welcome/Orientation in the Board Chambers

8:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.       
Introduction of staff in the Board Chambers – students shadow staff members

11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.     
Mock Board meeting in the Board Chambers

12:15 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.       
Lunch at the Stafford Rescue One building

1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.         
Students attend Board of Supervisors meeting

Stafford hosts Student Government Day each year to help students meet the Standards of Learning requirements relating to local government and the critical role it plays in each citizen’s life.
