Stafford County to Host Student Government Day
February 28

Members of the Board of Supervisors and County staff will host 75 students from Brooke Point High School, North Stafford High School, Stafford High School, Colonial Forge High School and Mountain View High School during Student Government Day on Tuesday, March 6, 2007.

Students will discuss the tax system with Commissioner of the Revenue Scott Mayausky and Treasurer Bill Colvin, learn about voting in Virginia, and attend a demonstration by the Geographic Information Systems staff. Students will also work one-on-one with employees throughout the Government Center. They will conduct a mock Board meeting at 11:15 a.m. to debate a plan to make improvements to Courthouse Road. The topic will include how to fund the project, purchase of rights-of-way, and relocation of utilities.

“One responsibility of local government is to educate the next generation about their rights and responsibilities as citizens, and to encourage them to become more involved,” said Steve Crosby, County Administrator. “Student Government Day offers a broad overview of the many services jurisdictions provide, from building permits to enacting laws with far-reaching consequences.”
