Becoming an Officer of Election

Officers of Election are appointed each year by the Stafford County Electoral Board to work at the polls on election day. More than 200 Officers are required for a general election. If you are free on election day, want to support the democratic process, see all your neighbors and earn $115, you might consider becoming an election official.

A Chief Officer of Election is in charge at each polling place and is responsible for its management. The Stafford County Electoral Board provides overall management for elections. Training is provided prior to each election. Compensation for training is $15. Some of the duties at the polling place are:

  • Setting up the equipment
  • Demonstrating how to mark the ballot
  • Checking voters in and marking the poll book
  • Issuing ballots
  • Providing voter assistance and instructions
  • Insuring a fair and impartial election is held
  • Certifying the election results
  • Disassembling and storing the equipment

You are required to report to your assigned polling place at 5:00 A.M.. You do not leave until the polls close (7:00 P.M.) and the paper work is completed.

You may be assigned to your own polling place or to another within the County.

You must be a registered voter.

Send e-mail to registrar@co.stafford.va.us or call 658-4000 for additional information or to receive the necessary paper work.
