Sewer Backups

IMPORTANT NOTICE
regarding Sewer Backups

(A rare, but most unpleasant event) DID YOU KNOW ??? t The County does not pay for damages caused by sewer backups unless the backup can be shown to be due to negligence on the County’s part.

  • Most homeowner’s insurance policies do not pay for sewer backups.

  • You may have to pay yourself!

WHAT CAN YOU DO ???

  • Call your insurance agent regarding your coverage.

  • Consider purchasing a homeowner’s policy or rider to your existing policy which covers sewer backups if you are currently without such coverage.
  • Do not place grease in any form, diapers, rags, or other objects down any drain or toilet.
  • Instruct your children not to throw debris down manholes.
  • Check your trees. Roots from trees could be blocking your sewer lateral.
  • Call the Department of Utilities at 658-8695 during normal working hours and 658-4857 at night or on weekends and holidays if you suspect a problem with the sewer system. There is no charge for this service and it may save you a plumber’s bill if the problem turns out to be in the County’s lines.
