Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days

The Rappahannock Regional Solid Waste Management Board (R-Board) hosts four Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days each year at sites in Fredericksburg and Stafford. Residents from both localities can bring household hazardous wastes to the sites so that they can be safely disposed. The events usually take place during April/May and  September/October. Residents must provide proof of residency in either Fredericksburg or Stafford in order to drop off their hazardous materials.

Spring Household Hazardous Waste Days:

April 21, 9 am - 3 pm
Belman Road Recycling Center, 1200 Belman Road, Fredericksburg

May 19, 9 am - 3 pm
Regional Landfill, 489 Eskimo Hill Road, Stafford

The Environmental Protection Agency considers a substance hazardous if it can catch fire, react or explode when mixed with other substances, is corrosive or toxic. Many items that are found in garages, basements, bathrooms and kitchens are considered hazardous materials. Below is a list of waste materials that will be accepted at the center. Also included are the areas in and around the home in which they can be found.

Kitchen: bug sprays, floor care products, furniture polish and metal polish with solvent.

Garage: automatic transmission fluid, battery acid (or battery), brake fluid, car wax with solvent, diesel fuel, fuel oil, gasoline, kerosene, metal polish with solvent, and various other petroleum products. The Regional Landfill accepts oil, antifreeze and car batteries year round.

Workshop: paint brush cleaner with solvent, cutting oil, glue (solvent based), paint (oil based) , paint (auto) paint (model) paint thinner, paint stripper, primer, turpentine, varnish and wood preservative.

Garden: fungicide, herbicide, insecticide, fertilizers, rat poison and weed killer.

Miscellaneous: artists paints and mediums, dry cleaning solvents, fiberglass epoxy, gun cleaning solvents, lighter fluid, mercury and lithium batteries, moth balls, photographic chemicals (unmixed), swimming pool acid, computer equipment and fluorescent lights.

Medical or radioactive waste will not be accepted.

Individuals are asked to stay in their vehicles while professional handlers dispose of the hazardous materials. Surveys are conducted to determine the kind and amount of materials being disposed.
