Jury Duty

Jurors are selected from Voter Registration and the Department of Motor Vehicles at random for each court term.

Jury payment is set out of the Code of Virginia, Section 17.1-618 which sets the fee for Jurors at $30 per day.

If you have been selected for jury duty and have been assigned specific dates for scheduled jury service, you must call the Jury Hotline after 6:00 p.m. the night before you are scheduled, to assure the trial is still going forward. The Jury Hotline number is 540-658-4636 and you will need to enter the Code # 473 when prompted, to get to the correct message for jurors. It will then give you specific jury panel numbers that are still going forward for the next day or will tell you that all juries are off for that specific day.  So please before you call, have your panel number handy, which should be on the letter you get with your assigned dates.

If your panel is going forward, here are a few tips:

Proper attire is required - this does not mean a suit and tie, although if you wish to wear this it would be perfectly acceptable, for the guys-mostly dockers, khakis, nice jeans (no holes please), for the ladies-a dress, pants suit or nice slacks and a shirt, even nice jeans, would be perfectly fine.  We certainly want you to be comfortable, as it may be a long day for you.  But please remember to be respectful to the Court and DO NOT wear shorts, T-shirts with slogans, flip flops or have any bare shoulders or low cut blouses.

Jurors will be given time for lunch each day.  There is a deli across the street and other fast food establishments within short driving distances or you may bring a lunch. There is a soda machine available at $1.25 a bottle.

Cell phones are permissible during the breaks, but jurors are required to turn the cell phones OFF during court.

There is no facility for lap top connection.  Feel free to bring a book or magazine to read while you are waiting.

Please keep in mind you will be passing through security, so leave all unnecessary items: i.e. pocket knives, mace and etc. at home or in your vehicle.

On those days that STAFFORD COUNTY SCHOOLS are CLOSED due to inclement weather conditions, Jury Trials for those days are CANCELLED.

For any other additional questions, please feel free to call Lyle Haas, Jury Clerk, at 540-658-8573 from
8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.  If you cannot reach him, please call our front desk at 540-658-8750 and we will be glad to assist you.
